Las Meninas is a great art work by Diego Velazquez, who is the representative painter of the Spanish Golden Age. This painting is considered as one of the most famous works in Western painting. The main figure of the painting Las Meninas is the youngest daughter of King Philip IV of Spain, Princess Margaret. She is in the center of the screen with a decent grace. The maid on the left side kneels down offering the princess some refreshments. However, it seems that the little headstrong princess completely ignored the maid's action. Another maid on the right side is bowed to Margaret reverently, as if praying for the princess to have meal or something else. The lower right corner of the painting are two dwarfs for the palace entertainment and a dozing dog. Two elderly servants standing behind the Princess might be the responsible for supervising daily life of Margaret; they seem to be talking about something but suddenly interrupted.
The most interesting scene in this whole picture is that Velazquez makes himself appeared in it. He is holding a palette standing behind a huge canvas magically; as if that is a portrait he painted for himself. Velazquez deliberately highlights the Knight medals wore on his left breast, which is what he dreams for so as to reveal his own dignity. A guard soldier is standing at the exit of the hall with one foot one step lower than the other one. At this moment, all the eyes of the figure in the whole picture are caught by something ahead and what is it?
Through the mirror on the wall in the painting, we know it is King Philip IV and Queen Marianna that attract the attention of all the people. However, whether Velazquez is painting for while interrupted by the sudden appearance of Princess Margaret or he is just painting for the uncooperative Margaret while the emergence of the King and the Queen changes the story? People beside the little princess Margaret look panic while the painter is the only one to be so calm. This moment is frozen by the light hit into the room through the side windows as if the real and unprecedented moment that froze by the camera shutter. Las Meninas has enjoyed good reputation in Western art history. It is regarded as the theology of painting and the philosophy of art. Each object in this painting has the same size with the physical one, which shows Velazquez's excellent technique. He depicts every object subtly especially the arrangement of the texture, shape, space, light and dark is stunning.
